Utilization of the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) approach in nursing has been identified to have a profound impact on the cost and quality of care patients receive. Therefore, it is vital to encourage nurses and students in clinical practice to devise strategies that promote the approach’s application (Ellis, 2019). As a student, I would act as a role model by incorporating the approach to inpatient care. I would also use continuous medical education sessions as an opportunity to enlighten healthcare providers on the importance of EBP and the skills required in reading, evaluating, and critically appraising evidence. In addition, I will encourage healthcare professionals to participate in research and use available Internet resources to acquaint themselves with the current trends of practice. Lastly, my vast knowledge of EBP will be vital in enlightening the staff in my organization on the best practices that improve patient outcomes.
Discussion
The application of EBP in nursing practice is determined by knowledge about research, clinical expertise, and patient preference. Needs assessment identifies gaps that have to be addressed through evidence-based interventions. Therefore, EBP is a critical component when solving problems in the community or clinical setup (Ellis, 2019). Effective application of the EBP approach in nursing practice results in the dispensation of high-quality healthcare services, which implies improved patient outcomes. Health professionals, together with patients, become satisfied with the care provided. In addition, reports from prior studies indicate that incorporating the approach into practice reduces healthcare costs and increases patient safety as a result of reduced hospital stay, mortalities, and morbidities (Ellis, 2019). Therefore, the healthcare system should invest in programs that promote the translation of EBP into practice, which proves to be essential. In addition, more research activities are recommended to develop evidence for clinical practice.
