This paper’s target population is individuals aged 26-44 with obesity and adults of age 45-64. This data shows a need for interventions and campaigns against obesity in the region.

San Bernardino is a city that is located in Southern California in the Inland Empire region. This city is located in San Bernardino County and has a population of 222,797, as recorded by the census carried out in 2020 (World Population, n.d). San Bernardino is the eighteenth largest city in California and is the cultural, political, and economic hub of San Bernardino Valley. San Bernardino has an area of 59.6 square miles of land and 0.4 square miles of water (McGill et al., 2021). San Bernardino faces obesity as a public health problem, and the challenge needs to be addressed. Health inequities and disparities are related to the differences in experiences in acquiring health care, which correlates to economic, social, and environmental disadvantages.

San Bernardino County has a higher poverty rate than the state average. The medium annual income of the city of San Bernardino is $67,647 (San Bernardino County Community Indicators, n.d). For the population of this city, 31% of the people are white, and 8% are black Americans, while 51% are Hispanic (World Population, n.d). In addition to disparities caused by low income in the state, the prevalence of obesity is high across racial groups. Obesity problems are linked to various health-related conditions such as stroke, diabetes, and heart diseases. Black Americans and Hispanics are the most affected groups by this challenge of obesity (Freeman et al., 2022). Black Americans are at higher risks of undiagnosed obesity than whites; thus, they present as the group that is highly at risk of health disparities and inequities. Compared to the whites, the blacks are more uninsured and have low living standards.

San Bernardino is a great place to exercise and have a healthy meal and a wealth of recreational activities. Gyms and free community parks in San Bernardino are available in the city if one cannot afford a gym. Skate parks, nature preserves, and walking routes are among the many options available in addition to traditional parks.

More and more people are putting their health at risk due to unhealthy eating habits such as diabetes, heart disease, and lung illnesses.

Obesity is classified as a major public health issue as it is the second-highest cause of preventable deaths in the US after smoking. In 2019 adult obesity in San Bernardino County was ranked 37 out of the 58 counties of California (Gong et al., 2021). Among racial ethical groups, Black Americans are the most affected population with 45%, followed by Latinos at 40.5%; the whites are affected at 29.3% (World Population, n.d). In addition to health issues associated with obesity, other challenges are economic factors, premature disability, and low productivity.

Social Media Campaign Goal

The main objective of the social media campaign is to greater awareness of the city’s obesity health problems to provoke a dialogue that will be effective in encouraging change. The campaign will address the nature of the illnesses and how to prevent and manage obesity to keep the town safe from health concerns. The campaign will educate the residents on the preventive measures and practices concerning obesity.

Social Marketing Intervention

I will use social media platforms to help promote healthy habits. Social media has become an excellent deal for interactions and passing information. I will use Facebook and Instagram as my main platforms for the social media intervention to significantly attract large masses of people to address the health issue. Facebook will make it easier to educate large groups on the importance of a healthy diet and exercise to curb obesity issues. Additionally, it will help promote health message by surpassing geographic and physical access barriers of passing information hence promoting health equity. Through interactive sessions on the Instagram, it will be easy to understand people’s concerns and respond to them. Instagram will promote engagement and encouragement of people who might be willing to participate in weight management programs and provide crucial details concerning obesity. I will post the posters made on the both of the media platforms on the importance of a healthy diet and exercise. I will post new healthy recipes that are simple to make that entail a balanced diet. I will post exercise videos that are 5 minutes long that can be used to keep fit at home for those who cannot access the gym. Additionally, success stories of how a healthy diet has changed their lives will be uploaded twice every week.

My Social marketing will involve assessing behavioral change to address the prevention and control of a problem. Most of the residents of San Bernardino have access to these platforms. It is essential to guarantee that effective social marketing is used to manage the issues and challenges affecting individuals. Intervention strategies will be significant in the addition of prioritized segments of the audience, education of residents, and evaluation of the audience insights such as the advantages of the campaigns on the social media platforms and the marketing interventions used. The intervention will be carried out by encouraging the public through the social media platforms to avoid eating fast foods, eat a nutritious diet and engage in physical exercise.

The campaign will promote healthy diet choices for the residents of San Bernardino. These social media platforms have elements that enable messaging and sharing photos and videos that will be essential in delivering the message. These media channels will disseminate meaningful and concise statements about obesity issues and guide the people. The social media platforms transcend across different gender, ages, and people of other social statuses. Hence, the media will be significantly essential in reaching most residents and educating them.

If my chosen social media platforms are used appropriately, they will benefit the target population by creating awareness and developing information on obesity. The people will be educated on the causes of obesity, the effects of obesity, and how to detect obesity and prevention. As a benefit to those interested in learning about healthy eating and lifestyles, the program will provide a free and easy way to access new information. This could be a catalyst for new inspiration, zeal, and a will to lead a healthier life. When it comes to the discussion groups, they will be designed to build a sense of community while providing privacy for those who prefer to receive information discreetly. The program will allow viewers to access the content at their convenience, increasing the possibility of the target audience. The target audience will benefit from my message as the health challenge is relevant and affects their day-to-day lives. The people are hence aware of the existence of the health issue. They are mindful of its direct impact on their health and their children.

The use of relevant and effective hashtags on social media platforms will be essential in distributing the message to a broader audience. The youth will get encouraged to participate in fun challenges related to the topic to raise optimism and promote awareness to the audience. For this social media campaign, I will be the ultimate shareholder. My duties involve content creation, updating the content monitoring, and maintaining the campaign project. I will promote public awareness of obesity health issues, prevention measures, and community engagement in managing the illnesses. I will schedule time for the posts and ensure that they are exciting and informative. I will ensure that my settings are on to notify me when an audience contacts me and offer responses to questions asked. Local farmers’ markets and fresh markets for the availability of vegetables, employers, healthy eateries, and local gyms or recreational activities will work together to promote a healthy lifestyle. The information they may provide would help our campaign and add exposure to the companies to be a win-win situation.

The social media campaign will start in less than a week. The first week will involve gaining information on other such movements that have been held before, making a list of challenges that may come on the way, and setting goals for the campaign. In the second week, I will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the project, create social media accounts and audit them. I will identify keywords and information related to obesity to form my content. In the third week, I will be involved in developing my target audience. I will be keen to listen to the interests of my audience and recent research trends related to obesity. I will meet other organizations with the same interests and missions to gather more information on the topic. In the fourth and fifth weeks, I will develop a schedule for my campaign. I will be involved in creating content from the materials and resources I gathered. I will compare the result with the formulated goals, adjust them accordingly and post on the social media accounts I created. Each account with have links to my other platforms.

I will benefit from social media and advertising for the rest of my career as a nursing student. Professional and personal goals can be advanced through the use of social media. With social media, I will be able to learn more about my profession and connect with other nurses. Because my line of work necessitates fit and healthy individuals, I plan to make good use of social media in this regard. I intend to use social media to raise money for health-related projects in my neighborhood. These programs will give my patients the knowledge and resources to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and they will be inspired by my health and fitness regimens. Social media is the perfect place to increase awareness about a healthy population.
