Enhancing Learning Objectives for Nursing Professionals

Learning objectives play a major role in the educational experience of every person, especially nursing professionals. As a result, it is crucial that they are formulated in accordance with the established frameworks. The first learning objective presented in the case at hand, namely, “Students will know the names of the all the medicines for cancer,” is problematic. Specifically, it simply implies having knowledge of random cancer medication. Such knowledge remains useless because it is not tied to any skill relevant to the student’s practice. Therefore, the correct version would have to be the following, “Students will describe different types of cancer medicines and their application.” Such a learning objective concerns both cognitive and psychomotor domains, which are essential during learning (Bastable, 2019). The aforementioned learning objective will enable students to not only name cancer medicines but also describe how and under which circumstances they are applied.

Another learning objective with issues is, “Students will be able to apply one of the many learning theories of teaching and learning and be able to apply those to many real-world situations.” The objective is not comprehensive since it mentions only one learning theory. Students must be familiar with all major learning and theories and have to be able to utilize them in a variety of situations. “Students will be able to apply all key learning theories of teaching and learning and be able to apply those to many real-world situations” must therefore be the goal. Such an objective will enable students to embrace a comprehensive approach to learning and use not one but several theories.

Finally, the learning objective, “Students will learn how to teach and learn,” also has a considerable problem. Essentially, the learning objective is not specific because it does not cover the methodology of teaching and learning. Moreover, the verb, to learn, used in the objective is not measurable and must be changed to one representing the cognitive, affective, or psychomotor domain (Violato, 2018). Thus, the corrected objective will be, “Students will be able to employ teaching and learning frameworks.” Such an objective uses a measurable verb to employ, and is tied to both cognitive and practical skills.
