The argument to be addressed in the persuasive essay will be that workplace stress has a long-term adverse effect on employee well-being within and outside their work environment, and organizational efforts should mitigate it. Since the proposed argument focuses on applying psychological concepts in the field of business, it has a direct connection with the major in psychology. The topic is debatable since one side of the argument claims work stress is a positive, motivating factor while opponents emphasize the negative effects of stress.
The intended audience of the persuasive essay will be the management of businesses. The challenges of supporting the argument for this audience might include the unwillingness of the management to invest in stress management, which might produce a significant level of resistance to change. The goal intended to achieve by this essay is to persuade the decision-makers in the business world to initiate stress-management psychological interventions for their employees, given the negative implications of stress on their well-being. To achieve this goal, the essay will rely on credible and strong evidence, an established opposing perspective, and its rebuttal. The first key point to be addressed in the essay is the inevitability of workplace stress in performance-excellence-oriented organizations. The second point will be focused on the contribution of elevated stress to employee burnout. The third point will be related to the negative implications of workplace stress on employee mental health from a long-term perspective.
The first source to be used in the essay is Cross Ogohi Danie’s scholarly article titled “Effects of Job Stress on Employee’s Performance,” in which the author investigates the effects of stress on employee performance. This source will be used to discuss a possible counterargument claiming the positive implications of workplace stress since it is claimed to be a “person’s adaptive response to a stimulus that places physical and psychological demands on a person” (Daniel 377). The second source will be Soelton et al.’s research article titled “Dealing with Job Insecurity, Work Stress, and Family Conflict of Employees,” where the authors study the relationship between stress and burnout. They claim and empirically justify that workplace stress contributes to employee burnout and has a generally destructive effect on the psychological well-being of individuals (Soelton et al. 179-171). To integrate the evidence from sources into the essay effectively, one will provide logical ties and explanations for the statements in agreement with the delivered argument.
