AGU Citation Style is based on investigations of two manuals: Chicago Manual of Style and Words Into Type. The sphere of its usage is entirely scientific, therefore one of its most peculiar features is usage of punctuation in the extent required for clarity. Because of the increased clarity, hyphenation is often used; as for commas, the balancing ones are forbidden, whilst usage of ordinary commas is accepted around, before and after nonrestrictive clauses and phrases.
AGU Reference List:
- include articles, books, reports, papers, electronic material, maps, theses
- don’t include unpublished materials
- organize references in an alphabetical order by the last name of the author(s)
- if there are several works of the same author, the earliest work comes first
- if there are several coauthors, list them alphabetically
- for more than ten authors use “et. al”
- use only initials for first names
- arrange text citations by the last name of the author and the year
- if there are two or more publications by the same author in the same year, distinguish them with a, b, c, etc. after the year
AGU Abbreviating Titles:
- abbreviate the names of serial publications and reports
- don’t abbreviate one word title
- omit articles, conjunctions, prepositions, hyphens, parentheses, commas in abbreviated titles
