Referencing in IEEE Style requires a number given to a citation, that is enclosed by square brackets. These are square brackets that distinguish IEEE Style among other citation styles. Citations are numbered in the order they appear in the text. Each citation corresponds to a numbered reference given at the end of the paper (in a reference list). The same number of the source is used for all subsequent references.
 
Note, that you should enclose each reference number in square brackets on the same line as the text, before any punctuation; make a space before the bracket.
 
IEEE Documentation comprises two parts: the citation and a reference list.
 
IEEE Citation
 
Substitution. Referencing in IEEE style allows to substitute reference numbers for the name of the author whenever appropriate.
 
Placement. Numbers should be placed directly after the reference. Punctuation should be placed outside the square brackets, except commas used to separate multiple references - when more than one work appears in the same citation. In this place there shouldn’ t be any space between citation numbers. In a sequence of three or more citation numbers use a hyphen to separate a single range.
 
«Non-recoverable» information. Referencing in IEEE style encourages only citation of published works and unpublished materials available to scholars from official resources. For the so-called “non-recoverable” information, a citation number is unnecessary, identification of the author is to be done in the text itself.
 
Paraphrase. While rendering someone else’s thoughts and ideas you should prove it with some concrete information. Without proper documentation the statement will be treated just as if a mere opinion and it will have no professional value.
 
IEEE Reference List

• This is a list of all sources cited by the writer or referred to. It’s called References (left justified).
• The items of the reference list should be arranged by the order of citation, not by alphabetical order.
• Doublespace within and between entries.
• The numbers of the items should be left justified, enclosed in square brackets.
• Indent the text of all entries 2 spaces to the right of the closing bracket.
