Someone once created a phase that is popular now – writer’s block. And today everyone prefers to hide behind it instead of overcoming own laziness. But what is a writer’s block? Is it a fear to write? I don’t think so. A fear is something that keeps you in constant tension, while writing is just not able to cause such strong negative emotions. I would likely say that you know your writing is far from perfect, so you feel embarrassed to write, and finally hide behind definitions trying to make people around pity you.

It is time to pull yourself together. Here is how you can become more confident in writing.

  • Organize your workplace. Let’s imagine you’ve been walking around your table and thinking about the assignment. When you finally made up your mind and prepared to write, you discovered that you are missing a pen, notebook, or other writing tool. Like a drowning person struggling for one more breath of air, you jump at this chance and decide that if there is a problem, it’s just the wrong day for writing. If you keep your workplace organized, and know where to look for necessary things and materials, than nothing will distract you from work.
  • Journalists like to use “the bag” – a notebook where they write down data about books, magazines, web-sites, and other sources with interesting and useful information they can use in future. Start making up your own bag. It doesn’t mean you have to sit down and look for something stunning. Interesting information pops up unexpectedly. Just be prepared to write it down. If you have a personal library, use bookmarks for parts you consider worthy of note. You’ll see how it will help you in future.

  • Read more to learn the patterns. Plain theory (like writing tips) is one thing. Practice is something absolutely different. Set a goal. For example, read critiques in magazines, if you want to learn writing critiques. You’ll see how after several articles your brain will come up with a certain vision of a critique. Now try to write it.
  • Don’t put yourself into time limitations or schedule. Your mind has to be free from obligations and opened to creation. Most of the times when you put a deadline – to write a one-page essay in an hour – your mind stops working. It comes subconsciously because you start defending yourself from unnecessary forcing. Creative people don’t acknowledge limitations.
  • Write down ideas. Wherever you go, they can just occur. If you keep track of ideas (just like with “the bag”), they will help you in the least expected moment.
  • Don’t stop writing after failure. Even if there was more than one. Writing is a skill, just as muscles that don’t appear after two workouts. Keep on writing to get rid of typical mistakes, clumsiness and wordiness. Also, always finish something you started writing. Don’t quit halfway through, even if you see this is taking you nowhere. Even so, you still earn experience.
  • Take breaks. If you see that your hand is above a piece of paper, but there is nothing to write about, do something else. Put it aside for couple hours, days, or weeks, but do come back to finish.
