Let’s say you want to write a term paper or a research paper. You’ve got a topic and decide to go over some notes taken in class because you remember that you had a discussion concerning some important aspects of your theme. You open a binder, go over scribbles that you managed to make, and realize that all the important information slipped away somehow. The ability to take good detailed notes will help you with a lot of projects. And it’s easy to learn note taking techniques:

  • Listen carefully, when attending lectures. Sometimes a lecturer wants to explain something before letting you write it down. Follow his voice, for it usually lets you know when to write, and when to listen. If you listen and understand, you can easily write down ideas in your own words and, therefore, memorize them easier.
  • If a lecturer gives handouts, look through them to make sure you don’t waste time writing down the same information.
  • There is nothing wrong in asking a lecturer about something you didn’t hear or understand. It will be easier to understand notes when they are complete.
  • When taking notes, pay attention to the facts. They are an important thing to write down, because they will be your support when preparing homework assignments.
  • Pay attention to quotations. Writing them down is a good idea, but if you choose to do so, write them down carefully. Quotations are not something to write in your own words for they are sayings that don’t belong to you. It will also help you to avoid embarrassment when providing prominent quotations (there is nothing worse than turning famous sayings inside out).

  • Pay attention to your writing – it has to be compressed and accurate.
  • If some information attracts you, write it down. You will probably want to use it when preparing homework assignments. Remember that usually you take more notes than you will actually use, and it’s absolutely okay.
  • Don’t write every long word/phrase/sentence that a lecturer gives you. Translate them into your own words or short descriptions that will save time and effort.
  • Sometimes students design their own abbreviations for long words (if they can’t be substituted, like in quotations) or common phrases, which make a writing process more quick. You should probably think about your abbreviations, too.
  • When making notes, pay attention to the main issues, putting aside the details (unless you know that some specific details will be helpful in preparing a homework assignment).
  • Listen carefully, and select those points or parts of the lecture that you know for sure will be useful.
  • When writing, leave space between passages. Maybe, you will want to add your comment to them, or your lecturer will want to come back to the issue and provide it with new information.
  • Don’t organize notes as a single piece of text. Use tabulations, paragraphs, sections, subsections and highlighting to make notes visually easier to read. Psychologically, small passages are not as hard to understand, as long ones.
  • Review the notes immediately after the lecture to see if there are misunderstandings that need to be taken care of.
  • Exchange notes with your friend to fill in on the blanks that you probably left.
